Mary Lou Harrison is the daughter of a Rotarian and a Rotary Ann. She grew up volunteering at Rotary events and projects of all sorts. Her early exposure to the Rotary family included hosting exchange students attending the Rotary International Convention in Toronto in 1983. A strong advocate for the role of women in Rotary, Mary Lou renewed her relationship with Rotary after watching female members of the Rotary Club of Parkdale-High Park interviewed on television about the creation of The Redwood Shelter. However, she didn’t join Rotary until several years later when someone asked her! Thank you to Rotarian Scott Allison. Mary Lou is a Charter Member of the Rotary Club of Northumberland Sunrise, a Past President of the Rotary Club of Whitby Sunrise, and an active member of the Rotary Club of Toronto Sunrise. This in no way means that she is a morning person! Her district roles have included the positions of Assistant Governor, Vocational Service Chair, Co-Chair of RADAR (Rotary Action for the Development of AIDS Responses), and membership on the Communications Team. She can often be found on an event planning committee (Rotary Foundation Walk, Rotary AIDS Walk, District Conferences, Peace Conference etc.) and/or behind the camera capturing wonderful Rotary moments to feed social media. Currently, Mary Lou is the Parish Administrator at St. Anne’s Anglican Church, a national historic site, active church, and performing arts venue in downtown Toronto. Her work life has included positions in the Ontario government as an Arts Consultant, her own catering and events management company, teaching cooking, freelance writing, and being the editor of a community newspaper. Mary Lou is married to David, and they have two daughters, Rachel and Sarah. Outside of Rotary, her interests include gardening, reading, board and card games, and the environment. She is thrilled that Rotary International President Ian is a tree hugger too! |

Dr. Samis has a Bachelor’s degree, Master’s and PhD from Queen’s University, as well as an MD, General Surgery fellowship, and Critical Care Medicine fellowship. This was the result of 30 continuous years of university study, and gives Dr. Samis the dubious honour of being the longest continuous student in Queen’s University history. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, the American College of Surgeons, and the American College of Chest Physicians, and is an Intensivist, General Surgeon, and Physician Stroke Champion at Quinte Health Care in Belleville. He also works as a Regional Trauma Team Leader, Medical Response Team physician, and Cardiac Surgery Intensivist at Queen’s University where he is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery. Dr. Samis developed a research interest in diet and cardiovascular disease after completing his doctorate in GI physiology. He has published in this area and has served on several national expert panels associated with the development of guidelines related to diet and cardiovascular disease. He was one of the experts that served on the Advisory Panel for Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada’s 2015 Position Statement on Saturated Fat, Heart Disease and Stroke. In addition, Dr. Samis was instrumental in establishing a telestroke program at Quinte Health Care in Belleville Ontario in 2010, and the program has since become one of the busiest Telestroke Centres in Canada. Dr. Samis has participated in various stroke-related education and policy activities at the local, provincial and national levels. He had a second career as a reserve soldier in the Canadian Army and retired, after 29 years of service, at the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel. He lives in Kingston with his wife and four teenage children. |

Celebrate women in Rotary with us and enjoy a fun-filled evening in great company! $35 per person for an evening reception with finger foods, special "mocktails", door prizes, and a cash bar. Did you know that on 23 January 1989 the Council on Legislation voted to admit women into Rotary clubs worldwide? This remains a watershed moment in the history of Rotary. "My fellow delegates, I would like to remind you that the world of 1989 is very different to the world of 1905. I sincerely believe that Rotary has to adapt itself to a changing world," said Frank J. Devlyn, who would go on to become RI president in 2000-01. The vote followed the decades-long efforts of men and women from all over the Rotary world to allow for the admission of women into Rotary clubs and several close votes at previous Council on Legislation meetings. The response to the decision was overwhelming: By June 1990, the number of female Rotarians had skyrocketed to over 20,000. By 2010, the number of women was approaching 200,000. Currently, over there are over 277,000 female Rotarians, not including the awesome women in Interact, Rotaract, Rotary Youth Exchange etc. Celebrate the achievements and contributions women in Rotary have made over the years. Join us at the YWCA in Toronto for delicious finger foods, amazing networking, and the opportunity to swap stories of inspiration. Want to learn more about women in Rotary? |
